The sky was starting to soften as we pulled into Gijang.
Late afternoon light spilled across the quiet roads — a perfect weekday choice to avoid the weekend rush.
Tucked not far from Lotte World and the East Busan Outlet stood a striking black building with an elegant, gallery-like form.
Its name: Gowajeong (고와정).
At first glance, it looked more like a boutique museum than a BBQ restaurant.
And in many ways, it felt like both.

🏛 Architecture That Speaks in Quiet
The entrance begins with a clean stone path.
Inside, the space opens up in a modern “ㄷ”-shaped layout, allowing for both natural light and privacy.
Each room is designed like a private gallery:
quiet, minimal, and refined — sunlight pouring in, voices kept low, and space to actually enjoy your meal.
Best of all? Reservations are available for private rooms, which is rare and deeply appreciated — especially for family gatherings or special dinners.

🥩 Choose Your Cut, Create Your Experience
Gowajeong follows a “sikyuk-sikdang” (butcher-style restaurant) format.
You choose your meat directly from a display case — all beautifully arranged, well-aged, and carefully labeled.
We picked:
- Tosalsal (hanging tender) – lean, clean, and delicate
- Sirloin – the classic cut, always dependable
- Anchangsal (outside skirt) – thick, juicy, and our favorite of the night
After your selection, a ₩5,000 per-person plating charge covers sauces, sides, and setup.

🍽 Every Plate Thoughtfully Served
The meal began with a warm, creamy soup — light and comforting, gently waking the palate.
First on the grill was the tosalsal.
It was delicate, barely marbled, and had a soft, clean finish.
Not much chew — just smooth texture and a gentle, meaty aroma.
The sirloin followed, with its signature richness.
Full of umami, slightly smoky from the grill, it hit all the right notes.
It was the kind of cut that never tries too hard — it just delivers.
But then came the showstopper: anchangsal.

🔥 Anchangsal + Gamtae = Magic
Anchangsal at Gowajeong is thick, with just enough fat to shine on the grill.
It arrived with two unexpected companions:
- Gamtae powder (감태가루)
- Wine salt
The gamtae — a type of seaweed — added a deep, savory oceanic note that enhanced, not overpowered, the beef.
Sprinkled lightly, it transformed the bite into something new: familiar yet exciting, subtle yet bold.
This wasn’t just beef.
This was a composed flavor experience.

🥘 A Bowl of Memory: Gangwon-do Bang-a Doenjang
We ordered a soup that sounded as intriguing as it tasted:
Bang-a Kkamak Doenjang, a thick soybean stew infused with the scent of Korean wild sesame leaf (방아잎).
Unlike your typical doenjang jjigae, this one was thick, rich, and intensely aromatic.
Filled with tofu, mushrooms, zucchini, and deep herbal notes, it felt rustic and nourishing.
Some might find bang-a a little intense — but if you appreciate herbal, old-school Korean flavors, you’ll love it.

❄️ Ending with Cool Simplicity
We closed the meal with cold noodles (naengmyeon).
Springy noodles, clear broth, and a half-boiled egg — nothing fancy, but perfectly cooling after the richness of grilled beef.
To finish: a small yakgwa (Korean honey cookie) and a glass of omija tea.
Short, sweet, and thoughtful — the kind of detail that leaves a lasting impression.

📝 Final Thoughts
Gowajeong doesn’t shout luxury — it whispers quality.
From the architecture to the seasoning, from the plating to the finish, it’s clear that this is a place designed not just to eat, but to remember.
Whether you're treating your parents, planning a quiet date night, or gathering with friends,
this is more than just BBQ. It’s a full Korean culinary experience — elegant, respectful, and unforgettable.
